.mortlach - rare old

A while ago, we had a lovely time at the Benelux release of the new Mortlach range at an event in Brussels, where we met with Miss Mortlach and got to try the three expressions in the range over a lovely dinner party with some journalists and bloggers from the Benelux. Some time after the party, we received a box with three samples of the whiskies we tasted, and fashionably late as I always am, here is the first of the three.

43.4% abv, €65*, single malt

Nose: sweet, vanilla, fruity, ripe peaches, apricots, plums, warm apples, gentle herbs, thyme, a hint of laurel
Palate: sweet, warm caramel apples, creamy, herbs, laurel, marjoram, a bitter thyme, citrus, orange peel, marmalade
Finish: sweet, gentle (for the lack of a better word), rather short
Mark: +++++

Conclusion: It is an okay dram, but not as spectacular as one would expect for the price. Amongst Whisky connoisseurs around the globe, Mortlach has long had a special place, and with this release, Diageo wanted to broaden the availability for their Beast. I personally think that this 2.81 times distilled monster is a bit too tame for what she could have been.

*per 50cl
