.nzwc - dunedin doublewood - 15yo

The New Zealand Whisky Collection - Doublewood aged for 15 years - Dunedin MasterBlended Whisky - DoubleWood. Quite a mouthful, and with all the spices running around on your palate, she really lives up to that, although she might have had a little more oumpf with a slightly higher abv.

40% abv, €70, blend

Nose: herbal, saffron, curry powder, sweet rye-bread, hand-cream, floral, sun-flowers, menthol, tobacco, cherry-pie, dried figs
Palate: sweet, honey, floral, sunflower-seeds, rye-bread, herbal, currywurst, curry powder
Finish: sweet, warm cherries, warm and sweet mulled wine, medium long, a hint of sweetness from tropical fruit (kiwifruit, pineapples) and a touch of minty freshness
Mark: +++++

Conclusion: Really nice. She needs a little time to get going, but when she is on her way, she doesn't stop easily. For the quite steep (guestimated) price, you get a whisky that is different from your average whisky, close to being an aged grain whisky - all of that from New Zealand nonetheless.

More info, from the distillery:
A MasterBlend of 70% single malt and 30% premium grain whisky produced from unmalted barley in the legendary Willowbank distillery in Dunedin, using the finest local barleys and some of the purest water on earth - snowmelt from the Southern Alps, filtered naturally through the Great Moss Swamp. Aged for 6 years in American Bourbon barrels, before finishing in French Oak NZ wine barrels, giving ruby colour, depth of character and long-lasting, rich flavours.
The Story behind the DoubleWood: The awesomeness of the Dunedin DoubleWood comes from the foresight of our predecessors, the Preston Family, to transfer a large number of six year old MasterBlended whisky from American Oak to French Oak ex-red wine barrels. The new barrels came from the North Island and previously contained New Zealand Pinot and Cab Sauv. The Prestons released their DoubleWood after 2 years in French Oak. Our current release has benefited from at least nine years in the new barrels giving it a truly unique flavour.
