Sweden. Not the country you first think of when talking whisky. This Bärnsten, the fifteenth release in the Moment series of Swedish Mackmyra, was released in a limited release of 1550 bottles. A recipe of smoked barley, matured in a combination on Bordeaux wine casks, Cloudberry wine casks and Swedish oak casks.

The 17th door of the Drinks by the Dram WhiskyAdvent Calendar 2015 reveals Mackmyra's core expression. A light Swedish whisky matured primarily in first fill bourbon barrels but also includes whisky aged in Sherry and Swedish oak casks, as well as some smokier malt.

46,1% abv, €55, single malt, non-chill filtered, natural colour

Nose: young, fresh, cirtus, fruits, apples, pears
Palate: sugar-sweet, vanilla, fruits, sharp
Finish: gentle, pretty short, honey
Mark: +++++

Conclusion: Promising enough to keep an eye on, with the rapidly growing number of Swedish single malts, this os one of the first that has come of age.
