We recently received a package from the people of Glenmorangie with a foursome of whiskies which we have tasted in their inaugural twitter tasting #GlenmorangieLive. Amoug the four samples was their most recent release: the Duthac - first to be released of the new Legends series, targeted on the worlds Duty Free market in 1 liter bottles.

During the twitter tasting for which we were invited by Glenmorangie, we were presented with one of the top-shelve whiskies the brand has to offer. During the tasting, Josh Feldman taught me an alternative expression for something not dry or sweet, but somewhere in the middle: "off-dry", which I was happy to nick from him (he nicked it from F. Paul Pacult in his turn anyway), for future use.

Recently, we were invited to an online twitter tasting with four different expressions of the Glenmorangie range. One of the expressions was the Glenmorangie Original, which I had Originally (see what I did there?) created a tasting note for in March 2013, in Dutch. High time to re-visit the dram and wonder myself why we do not have a bottle of this in our standard selection of whiskies...

neus: vanille, rauw deeg, sinaasappelschil, anijs, hazelnoten, amandelspijs, bijenwas, eikenhout
smaak: zoet, vanille, viooltjes, rozebottel, honing, witte chocola, scherp op de tong en verhemelte
afdronk: traag en lang, vanille, verschillende bloemen, honing, tannine
score: +++++

conclusie: Heerlijk. We hebben deze whisky geproefd tijdens het Hielander Whisky Festival in Alkmaar, februari 2013, waar we snel overtuigd waren een fles voor onszelf aan te schaffen. Ze zal niet láng in de kast staan, vrees ik.

De Glenmorangie Ealanta (Gaelic voor bekwaam en ingenieus) heeft gedurende 19 jaar in nieuw Amerikaans wit eiken gerijpt, waar niet eerder whisky of een andere drank in heeft gerijpt. De bomen zijn met de hand geselecteerd in 1990, hebben ruim twee jaar als staven gedroogd om in 1993 tot vaten vermaakt en gevuld te worden met de Glenmorangie new-make spirit. In 2012 ging het resultaat in de fles, als vierde in Glenmorangie's jaarlijkse Private Edition serie, waar eerder de Sonnalta PX, Finealta en Artein onderdeel van uitmaakten.

conclusie: anders. Niet eens zo héél anders dan the Original die deze versie heeft vervangen in 2007, maar sommige elementen kan ik in deze versie niet terugvinden die wel in the Original aanwezig zijn, en andersom.

Mijn buurman had ooit een literfles meegenomen van een tax-free shop, maar was bij thuiskomst teleurgesteld in de smaak van het product. Nu, een paar jaar later is op mijn verzoek deze fles weer eens uit zijn kast gekomen ("als je hem lekker vindt, mag je hem hebben") en zijn we ze gaan proeven. Ik had nog een héél klein beetje van het laatste restje van the Original en deze hebben we een zo goed mogelijk vergelijk gegeven. Buurman heeft de fles wél weer mee naar huis genomen...

neus: overrijpe peer, fruit, zoet, bloemen, peperkoek, pure chocolade
smaak: honingzoet, nog meer peer, scherp op de tong
afdronk: pittig, lang, zoet, peer, later weer metaal
score: ++++

conclusie: Oela-la. Ik hou niet eens van peer, maar dit is wel erg mooi.

Na de eerste tien jaar in ex-Bourbon te hebben gerijpt, heeft deze serie een extra rijping van twee jaar in Sauternes vaten gekregen, wat haar een heel mooi en zoet karakter geeft.

neus: fris, honing, bloemen,
smaak: zacht, zoet, later pittig - witte peper, vettig
afdronk: zoet, traag, later weer metaal
score: +++++

conclusie: doemediema. Een hele mooie, vrij complexe whisky. Ik ben wel een liefhebber van sherry-finishes en ook deze stelt me niet teleur.

Zoals veel van de standaard serie van Glenmorangie heeft ook deze haar eerste tien jaar doorgebracht in ex-Bourbon vaten om een extra rijping van twee jaar in ex-Oloroso sherry vaten te krijgen.

.glenmorangie - quinta ruban

46% abv, €40, single malt, non chill-filtered

Nose: sweet, herbal, musty, dry wine, port
Palate: sweet, sharp, less dry as expected from the nose
Finish: this is dry, more wine as whisky, later metallic, sweet in throat
Score: +++++


Conclusion: Good. I once poured this on a party at work to non-whisky drinkers, where they decided to get a taste. Shame, because she would be better with a nice piece of old cheese and a warm hearth.

The spirit of the Quinta Ruban has matured in ex-bourbon casks to be finished in ex-port casks for two years.
