.compass box - flaming heart - 15th anniversary edition

"Every great achievement is the victory of a Flaming Heart."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

The fifth release of this limited edition blended malt, honouring the 15th anniversary of the Compass Box.

48.9% abv, €100
single malt, non-chill filtered, natural colour

Nose: fresh, citrus, blood oranges, fruit, green apples, pears, mango peel, banana peel, a hint of smoke, menthol, eucalyptus, dates
Palate: sweet, creamy, smoke, hot embers, firm, spicy, peppers, herbs, rosemary, sage, fruit, warm pear, warm mango, quite dry after a while
Finish: long, smoke, spicy, sage, sweet, liquorice, a touch of mint, walnuts
Mark: +++++

Conclusion: very nicely balanced. I expected more smoke, since 65.5% of the contents is Caol Ila, but the Higland malts really add some beautiful layers of (Clynelish-esque) cream and fruit not typically found in the Meaty Islay Peat Monster. Very nice.

More info: Although they cannot officially tell any longer, the cards we received in the package, still carried the detailed makeup of this edition:

14yo Caol Ila matured in a refill Americam Oak Hogshead - 38.5%
30yo Caol Ila matured in a refill Americam Oak Hogshead - 27.1%
20yo Clynelish matured in a rejuvinated Americam Oak Hogshead - 24.1%
7yo Highland Malt* married in a new French hybrid barrel - 10.3%

So in essence, this makes it a 7yo blended malt, by all rules, regulations and laws.

*a 2 year marriage of Clynelish, Teaninich and Dailuaine
